a drawing a day

Tuesday, February 13, 2018 - one napkin at a time

With the posting of this drawing it seemed like the perfect time to tell you where these drawings come from.  For the past couple of years virtually all the drawings I post have been done on cocktail napkins.  Besides the obvious reason, I began drawing on cocktail napkins to help overcome my fear of drawing and to make it easier to draw every day (or nearly every day).  It’s hard to be precious about a drawing done on a napkin.  The napkins are small, about 4 ½ or 5 inches square, the paper has a somewhat rough texture, and it is highly absorbent.  There’s no erasing, no correcting, it’s a one-way ticket.  So if it doesn’t work out, you just throw it away and start a new one!

Some of the drawings are from photographs, some are sketches of people at the bar, and many are straight from my imagination.   I often just start moving the pen and see where it takes me.  In subsequent posts I’ll write more about my process, about drawing in general, and about architecture and design.  Thank you for following along.
